Description
Hey there Sci-Fi fans! This is an original, late 1920's or early 1930's German tobacco card and measures 3 1/8" x 5 11/16". It would have come in packs of Vom Werden tobacco and was intended to be pasted into a book about German cinema along with other cards from the series.
This particular card, number 137 of Group 39 depicts the iconic scene from Fritz Lang's revolutionary film, Metropolis wherein, Rot Wang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) introduces Joh Freder (Alfred Abel) to his the Machine Mensch (can you believe that Brigitte Helm is actually INSIDE this suit?!).
These tobacco cards are licensed by UFA and Ross Verlag who supervised printing to ensure the highest quality.
The card is a single color (black) lithographic print with German text on the reverse. It is printed on fairly thin, less than 25pt card stock. It is very frail in this regard and so, probably not many have survived in such great condition. The only point of concern regarding condition is that yes, this card appears to have been adhered to the book as intended and then later fell out or carefully removed. It has four dabs of damage from the adhesive, but fortunately, the majority of the text is in tact and the paper is not significantly thinned in these spots. There is also some slight wrinkling to the card but no creasing. Corners are very sharp and centering is dead on.
Be sure to check out those awesome Ben Day printing dots in the close-up image of Ms. Helm. Viewing this in person, particularly with a lupe is a real treasure!
I have been storing this safely away from UV light in archival safe materials. I will ship it in a conventional trading card top loader and typically only handle it while it's inside a toploader to discourage any damage or oil deposit.
I have been collecting Metropolis items for many years and have witnessed the prices continue to rise on movie-original items. I try to price my items fairly but also competitively in order to maintain the value of my, and others' personal collections. I have included a Best Offer option that I encourage you to use.
Thanks for clicking and happy bidding!
