In 1953, Princess of Wales, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, was coronated as Queen Elizabeth II.  While she had been Queen for almost a year, this made it official.  It is Royal Mint policy only to issue coins for a new Monarch only after their coronation The 1953 Coronation Proof Set is a rare one year type, with only 40,000 issued. Each set were issued in a maroon padded case, and contained a crown, 1/2 crown, florin, English coat of arms shilling, Scottish coat of arms shilling, sixpence, brass threepence, penny, 1/2 penny, and a farthing.
