It was made to enjoy Japanese Sake in hot or cold.
Of course, you can use it in any ways with your creative idea such as a small vase.
    *
    Bizen-ware is a s
    toneware,
which is made of a special clay (available only in Bizen area) and baked at very hig
    h
temperature (1,200~1,300 degrees Celsius). It does not use or apply any glaze before baking. The glaze naturally develops in the kiln from ash of tree and elements contained in the clay. Thus, it looks very natural and primitive.
Stoneware is still produced in Japan, because it is loved by the people who practice tea ceremony.
This sake flask is very rare and precious. Why?  Because it was made by a unique technique called "Hikidashi" (meaning "pull out" in English).
The flask was pulled out from the kiln at its highest temperature (1,200 ~ 1,300 C) and
    rapidly
cooled down to develop unique glaze
    around
    the surface.
Quite often flasks are broken during the process, which is a reason why this is rare and precious.
You would find some parts which look like shell (photo #1, 7 & 8). Yes, they are formed by attaching real shells. It is a part of design or decoration used by Bizen-ware pottery artist recently.
